On Visiting Auschwitz
We went to the place
Where humanity sneered
Its black lips
And spit one-point-six
Million times on itself
To insure its Aryan purity
After our anger
Came the mourning
For broken baby shoes
And charred eyeglass frames
Untold lives
Sadly without futures
Then came the horror
Of darkened standing cells
And tortured twins
Chemical, mechanical,
Maniacal sterilizations
Where careful notes were taken
Finally came despair
Without respite
How can there be hope
Of salvation for a species
That creates factories of death
Or just ignores the putrid smoke
